Can you have crabs in a freshwater tank?
Panther crabs are a fully aquatic species of crab native to Indonesia. They can live fully immersed in water always, so they are an excellent addition to any freshwater aquarium! Like the vampire crab, they are a non-aggressive species with relatively small claws.
Land crabs of certain types can be kept as pets within the home, and make for incredibly interesting and educational pets that are relatively low maintenance.
Ideally, crabs should be kept in a brackish aquarium with a sandy substrate and plenty of hiding places. Avoid mixing with slow, bottom dwelling fish, which are likely to be nipped. Crabs are natural scavengers and explorers and will eat almost any source of food.
Surprisingly, all crabs have to do is keep their gills moist. This allows oxygen in the air to diffuse into the moisture and into the gills, allowing the crab to breathe.
As a small bottom feeder, the cory catfish is an extremely efficient cleaner. It will scavenge the leftovers that have sunk to the bottom, cleaning up after messier fish that feed at the surface and midlevel of the tank.
By providing both fresh and salt water you are letting the crab decide for themselves what they need. Chlorine found in tap water is harmful to hermit crabs. In order to make tap water safe, dechlorinator drops can be used to remove Chlorine.
Keep them cool.
Keep the crabs cool and moist in a cooler or bushel basket. The optimal temperature is about 50 degrees fahrenheit. Any temperatures colder than that can kill the crabs.

Aquarium Conditions
Freshwater hermit crab care is generally pretty easy. They are very social and friendly, intelligent, and have long lifespans, if well cared for. Hermit crabs, despite their name, need to have other crabs around. They do best in pairs or groups and require plenty of space for roaming and exploring.
Do freshwater crabs need a heater?
Most freshwater crabs will be absolutely fine if your temperature is in the range of 20 – 24 °C (68 – 74 °F). Basically, we can say that they do not need a heater.
If you place the crab in freshwater it will kill it. The process will be slow and painful. i recommend going to a pet store like petco and buying one of their salt mixes instead of using table salt.
While crabs don't get housekeeping services in their native habitats, a pet hermit crab's habitat is a more confined environment that can get quite dirty. Waste buildup, spilled water, uneaten food and exoskeleton molting residue can all contaminate a tank, leading to strong odors and dangerous bacterial growth.
Place food and fresh water in the crabs enclosure around 7pm at night and remove any left over food by morning. Feed them every other day; daily if you have many crabs. Only use bottled water for hermit crabs. Tap water may contain chemicals that are not safe for crabs.
A 10-20 gallon tank is good for 1-3 crabs, and larger tanks can accommodate bigger groups of crabs and provide a more stimulating, enriching environment.
Crabs breathe underwater by drawing water (which contains oxygen) over their gills using an appendage called a scaphognathite, which is located on the crab's underside, near the base of its claws. The water passes over the gills, which extract the oxygen.

Are crabs salt water only?
Crustaceans usually live in or near the water. Most crustaceans that live in the water live in salt water. For instance, lobsters, crabs, and shrimp are found in the ocean. A few crustaceans, such as crayfish, live in fresh water.
Despite how you might find them in pet stores, fiddler crabs won't be happy or healthy in a completely underwater home. Fiddlers need to be able to climb out of the water and get some fresh air.
Blue crabs occur throughout Florida and are found in fresh, brackish, and saline ecosystems. Not only are they a key biological component of these ecosystems, they are commercially and recreationally fished.
To keep blue crabs alive, store them inside of a cooler or bushel basket in a damp, chilly, and well-ventilated area. Blue Crabs can last up to 24 hours out of the water as long as they are kept cool and moist.
Crabs and Their Instinct of Opportunistic Feeders
Of course, these creatures are beautiful, but most of them are opportunistic feeders! So, they will eat almost anything that is available in the tank. Therefore, do not be surprised if your crab will truly and actively hunt your fish, shrimp, or snails.

To keep the crabs alive, provide a dark, cold, and damp environment. Just bear in mind that the crabs require oxygen as well. Put them in an airtight tank with the lid closed. You may store the crabs in a tank with ice as long as the lid is split open to allow them to breathe.
Filters and heaters.
You can also purchase a heater for the aquarium to make sure the temperature inside stays between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, the most comfortable temperature for a fiddler crab. While both of these items are helpful, they aren't necessary for your fiddler crab.
Nofima trials show that the crabs may be stored for up to two months in such tanks without detriment to quality or animal welfare. In order to prevent the crabs from losing weight during two months of live storage, maintenance feeding is recommended.

If you put a salt water crab in fresh water its cells would burst because water would keep moving in. If you put a freshwater fish in salt water its cells would lose water and shrivel because the water has more salt than its cells.
Do freshwater crabs need land?
